How it works: Saxagliptin is an orally active inhibitor of the dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP4) enzyme. Metformin works by decreasing glucose (sugar) production in the liver and decreasing absorption of glucose by the intestines. By blocking the action of DPP4, saxagliptin causes more glucose to be removed via the urine, thereby reducing the levels of glucose in the blood.
Dosage: The recommended starting dose of Kombiglyze XR in patients who need 5 mg of saxagliptin and who are not currently treated with metformin is 5 mg saxagliptin/500 mg metformin extended-release once daily.
