Xolair (omalizumab) is a medication used to treat moderate to severe persistent allergic asthma and chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), also known as chronic hives, in patients who have not responded well to other treatments.
The typical dosage of Xolair for allergic asthma is based on the patient’s weight and serum IgE (immunoglobulin E) level. For adults and adolescents (12 years of age and older) with asthma, the recommended dose is usually 150 to 375 mg injected subcutaneously (under the skin) every two to four weeks.
For chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), the recommended dose of Xolair is typically 150 or 300 mg administered every four weeks.
Xolair works by targeting and binding to immunoglobulin E (IgE), a substance in the body involved in allergic reactions. By binding to IgE, Xolair helps to reduce the body’s allergic response, thereby decreasing asthma symptoms or reducing the frequency and severity of chronic hives.
