Description
Carbocisteine, also known as carbocysteine, is a mucolytic medication that reduces the viscosity of sputum. It is primarily used to help relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) and bronchiectasis, allowing patients to bring up sputum more easily. It can also be used to treat cystic fibrosis.

- It is produced by alkylation of cysteine with chloroacetic acid.
- It is taken orally, and it takes two to six weeks to be fully effective.
- Common side effects include nausea, headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.
- Serious side effects may include movement disorders, serotonin syndrome, and seizures.
- Carbocisteine should not be used with antitussives (cough suppressants) or medicines that dry up bronchial secretions.
- It is not expected to harm an unborn baby. However, it is not known whether carbocisteine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby.
- Carbocisteine is not FDA-approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
